NEWS MEDIA CONTACT: Chandra E. Fox, CEM (425) 776-3722 Emergency Services Coordinating Agency URBAN FLOODING EXPECTED BRIER, WA (December 24, 2008) - Warming temperatures and snow showers transitioning to rain will create more hazardous conditions and the threat of urban flooding. Clogged and frozen drains and catch basins can quickly result in flood conditions. "We would like to ask for the public's assistance in this effort," said ESCA Coordinator Chandra Fox. "Please assist your local Public Works departments by making sure storm drains and catch basins around your neighborhoods are clear of ice and debris." Public Works departments throughout the region have been working around the clock on snow removal operations; and will now be switching to storm water management as the mounds of cleared snow and ice begin to melt, and rain begins to fall. Temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid 40s by Saturday, with a 90% chance of rain. Citizens are encouraged to be pro-active in their neighborhoods by clearing gutters and drains. People who have experienced flooding of their homes or businesses in the past are strongly encouraged to have sandbags on hand to help protect their property. Sand and sandbags are available at most hardware and home improvement stores. Citizens may call 911 to report flooding conditions and standing water. ESCA is a city government emergency management organization formed by the cities of Brier, Edmonds, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, Lynnwood, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo and the Town of Woodway. |
